City of D’Iberville to Provide Water and Sewer Outside City Limits

From: City of D'Iberville     Nicole Young   Filed 7/2/08  GCN

Through a mutual agreement with the City of Biloxi, the City of D’Iberville was able to apply for and receive permission from the Public Service Commission to provide an area of Harrison County, northwest of the City of D’Iberville, water and sewer service. The need to provide this infrastructure to the area was brought about by several developers who are planning housing and retail development in the approximately 4.4 square miles, in addition to D’Iberville’s new high school which is being built in the area. Several developers approached the City of D’Iberville, according to City Manager Richard Rose, because the city was closer and more able to provide the water and sewer services needed. The city has a temporary certificate of permission. Permanent permission to provide and manage water and sewer to the area will be given to the city that successfully annexes the area.

The two cities are both hoping to annex the same area and are in litigation over the issue. A trial to decide which city will be able to claim the area is set for October 6. Until that outcome the City of D’Iberville hopes to encourage growth in the area and help ensure that more people stay on the coast and more developers look to the area as potential and fruitful investments. The need for affordable housing, in particular is one that the city officials are aware of. Providing more of the surrounding county areas with needed, reliable infrastructure will help the citizens of both the city and the county.
