Harrison County Prosecuting Attorney Bobby Payne to
Withdraw from Race

GCN has confirmed that long-time Harrison County Prosecutor Bobby Payne will withdraw from seeking another term in office.
In a phone call with Payne Friday afternoon, Payne said he was on his way to the County Courthouse to withdraw his name from the race. Payne has served as county prosecutor since 1988.
Bobby Payne is the brother to Sheriff George Payne, who has been facing a series of escalating problems at the Harrison County Jail.
"My decision does not mean that I am withdrawing from the race as a result of the troubles at the jail," Payne told GCN.
Payne said he will be supporting assistant county prosecutor Herman Cox for the position. He said that when he leaves office in some nine months that he may return to work as a part-time prosecutor.
The county prosecutor is a key position in law enforcement and the courts.
A spokesperson for the Harrison County Circuit Clerk called GCN to confirmed that Payne had withdrawn his name as a candidate late Friday afternoon.
