Broadwater Tower Demolished, Old Broadwater Hotel Soon to Follow
Coast Landmarks disappearing

Photo Story by Keith Burton   Filed 8/30/06

Hurricane Katrina did more than ravage the Coast and resident's lives. Katrina accelerated the way everyone remembers the Coast, especially in Biloxi as long-time landmarks are being removed.

The most recent landmark is the Broadwater Tower, which began its life as the Biloxi Hilton Hotel on the beach. Work crews this week have demolished the 10-story hotel, which was part of the former President Casino operation. Replacing the tower will be a new high-rise condo. The tower's removal will soon be followed as well by the old Broadwater Beach Hotel just west of the tower. The old Broadwater Resort hotel has stood since the 1940's and was once the Coast's premiere resort. The Broadwater Marina is currently in complete ruins, which has been its condition since the hurricane. Recently, the marina, despite its dilapidated condition, has been drawing fishermen as it once did when it was in far better shape.

The whole Broadwater property is slated to eventually become a major resort. But that won't be tomorrow.
