Wired for Protection
by Bruce W. Smith - Special to GCN
Double strands of razor-sharp concertina wire run the length of the CSX railroad tracks in Long Beach in an effort to keep looters from entering the devastated area to the south.
Here watchful military police check IDs of Long Beach residents as they pass through one of about five entrances off Railroad Avenue leading to the heavily damaged area on the south side of Long Beach.
Property owners and residents must show identification to enter the wired off areas.
Harrison County civil defense officials ordered the wire to go up as the long stretches of railroad track made patrolling the area to prevent looting difficult without the wire.
National Guard troops are also patrolling the area south of the tracks in Humvees and small ATV vehicles.
