Dillard's Store at Edgewater Mall Underway
Contractors have begun work that will eventually lead to a new Dillard's department store at Edgewater Mall.
Friday, workers were busy removing the exterior shell of the large store at the south end of mall that faces the beach.
Edgewater Mall received considerable damage during Katrina on August 29, 2005. While most the huge shopping center has been restored and open, Dillard's, which took the brunt of the damages has remained closed.
In an earlier report on GCN, mall managers said that Dillard's would be returning but will come back to an entirely new store with the old version replaced. That work is underway now. The new store will be configured differently with the expansion area to the west of the mall. The current structure was added to the front of the mall years ago by Gayfer's when that store was at the mall. The Gayfer's extension is being torn down and a new section will be added to the west, which is situated on slightly higher ground.
Mall officials say the new Dillard's is expected to open in about a year.
