Bald Eagle Spotted and Photographed Near Gulfport Harbor
Proof that the Bald Eagle is coming back from small numbers and being on the protected species list.
Jeff Loftus, who works at Gulf Regional Planning Commission in Gulfport, took these photos after spotting the eagle while driving along Hwy 90. The eagle was in the area between Island View Casino and Broad Ave. in Gulfport on Nov. 14 around 11:30 a.m. (Click on photo, left, for larger version)
"I was elated just to see one," Loftus told GCN. "I pulled off the road and parked behind some port-o-lets so as not to spook him, Loftus said.
The eagle was patrolling the shoreline like a Skimmer (however, without the beak in the water) and landed to eat briefly on the culvert until a woman who was walking the beach startled the bird to flight.
On July 6, 1999, a proposal was initiated "To Remove the Bald Eagle in the Lower 48 States From the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife." It was delisted on June 28, 2007.
