Clock Winding Down on Free Storm-Repair, Rebuilding Permits in Biloxi

From: City of Biloxi    Vincent Creel   8/13/07  GCN

Biloxi homeowners who have not yet obtained a permit for repairing or rebuilding their homes lost to Hurricane Katrina have until Aug. 31 to get free storm-repair permits from the city.

Beginning Sept. 1, the city will resume assessing fees for permits for those repairing or rebuilding their primary residences.

In the 24 months since Katrina, Biloxians repairing or rebuilding their storm-damaged or destroyed residences have saved anywhere from $25 to $250 or more in fees normally charged for permits for construction, electrical or plumbing work.

In all, the city has waived more than $130,000 in fees since Mayor A.J. Holloway suspended assessing repair fees in the wake of the storm. Permit fees were not waived for commercial work.

Permits may be obtained from the Building Division office, which is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Community Development Department, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, downtown Biloxi.
