Marine Life Cleanup Underway
Mayor Promises to Help Aquarium Stay in Jones Park Area

by Keith Burton   12/16/07

Since August 29, 2005, Marine Life Aquarium has been a mass of twisted green steel and debris at its site near the west corner of Gulfport Harbor and Jones Park. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the aquarium, which was among the Coast's most popular attractions.

The delay in cleaning up the site reportedly stemmed from conflicts regarding insurance and with the owners of the property. Many of those issues have moved past the point where the work to cleanup on the huge eyesore could get underway.

Gulfport Mayor Warr has been a supporter of Marine Life since becoming Mayor in July 2005, just weeks before Katrina slammed into the Coast.

Warr told WLOX this week that he will do whatever he can to help Marine Life remain somewhere at Jones Park.

The aquarium once offered porpoise shows and conducted porpoise training and research, as well as an entertaining mix of marine animals that performed before and enthusiastic audience.
