Mississippi Federal Disaster Request is Pending

PEARL Mississippi’s request for a federal disaster declaration is pending, which means Mississippi has not yet been approved for federal assistance such as the Disaster Food Stamp Program or Small Business Administration disaster loans.

Additionally, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is not paying for hotel bills for evacuees from Mississippi who fled Hurricane Gustav at this time. Louisiana has received this type of assistance because of the state’s federal disaster declaration.

On Sept. 2, Governor Haley Barbour requested assistance for debris removal for the three coastal counties – Hancock, Harrison and Jackson. Governor Barbour has also requested federal assistance through the Individuals and Households Program, the Disaster Food Stamp Program, Small Business Administration disaster loans for affected counties. Mississippi also hopes to receive a federal hazard mitigation grant to be applied statewide.

In Mississippi, 44 counties, 46 cities, one university – The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, and the Mississippi Band of Choctaws have declared local emergency proclamations.

Reported damage:

·         Harrison County has reported four homes destroyed seven homes with major damage and 345 homes with minor damage. The county has also reported nine mobile homes destroyed and 328 mobile homes with minor damage. Eleven businesses in Harrison have reported minor damage. Twenty-two public buildings have major damage in Harrison.

·         Amite County is reporting 195 homes with minor damage and 257 mobile homes with minor damage. Two homes in Amite have been destroyed and three have sustained major damage. Two mobile homes have been destroyed and seven have sustained major damage. Six businesses have minor damage. Eighteen public roads have minor damage and six public roads have major damage.

·         Pike County reports 18 homes with major damage and 36 with minor damage.

·         MEMA will update this information as it becomes available.
