(JACKSON, Mississippi) – Governor Haley
Barbour today announced that Lawrence P. Bourgeois, Jr., of Pass
Christian, has been appointed to the Mississippi Circuit Court (2nd
District—Harrison, Hancock, and Stone Counties) to replace former Judge
Steve Simpson, who left his post in April to serve as head of the state
Department of Public Safety.
“My Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee has worked hard to ensure
only qualified, conscientious, and dedicated people serve as judges,”
Governor Barbour said. “Larry is an outstanding choice for this position.
His record of integrity, fairness, and commitment to service will be an
asset not only to Gulf Coast citizens, but also to Mississippi’s judicial
system.”
Bourgeois, 53, has practiced law for 27 years in both the private and
public sector. Since 1995, he has worked in the district attorney’s
office of the 2nd Circuit Court District and currently serves as the
Gulfport division head responsible for all violent and gun cases.
Previously, he was the lead prosecutor for Hancock and Stone Counties.
Professionally, Bourgeois is a member of the National District Attorneys
Association and served on the board of the Mississippi Prosecutors
Association from 2004 to 2005. He has also been a member of the
Mississippi Bar Association since 1988 and the Louisiana Bar Association
since 1981.
A graduate of Loyola University School of
Law, Bourgeois also completed his undergraduate studies in business
administration at the university. He and his wife, Nancy, have three
children, Reed, Elizabeth, and Lawrence III.
Governor Barbour’s Judicial Appointments
Advisory Committee, which reviews the qualifications of potential judicial
appointees in accordance with Executive Order 914, found Bourgeois fully
qualified to serve in this post.
