Long-time Gulfport City Attorney Harry Hewes has confirmed to
GulfCoastNews.com today that he plans to retire sometime in August.
Hewes said that he has spoken to Mayor Brent Warr about retiring soon
and at over 70 years old he felt that it was time to leave city service.
He has been city attorney for more than 15 years.
"It isn't a reflection on anything going on in the city, I just feel I
need to do this for my family and health," Hewes said.
Unlike many other cities the size of Gulfport, almost all the legal
work is handled "in-house" in Gulfport. That has made for a busy life for
Hewes, who is well-respected in the area's legal community and among city
officials.
"He is someone that I deeply respect, and someone that respects the
law," said Councilwoman Barbary Nalley, contacted by GCN. Nalley is
currently out of town visiting relatives and was reach via cell phone.
Hewes wouldn't give an exact date for his retirement but said. "It's
time for me to move on."
In a Sun Herald newspaper report following GCN's story, Hewes said in a
letter to Warr that he intends to retire August 8th.
