Biloxi Firemen Respond to Saturday Afternoon House Fire
Homeowner at Work, Loses Everything

Story and Photos by Keith Burton - GCN 5/17/08

A beautiful day with cool temperatures was not enough to keep a Biloxi home safe from fire Saturday around 3:30 in the afternoon. A small two-story apartment home at 166 Iberville Drive near U.S. 90 burst into flames, the fire starting apparently somewhere inside. Nearby residents called the fire department, which saved the overall structure though the home's interior and roof are destroyed.

The homeowner was at work at the time of the fire. He arrived later while firemen were still inside the home extinguishing small flames that had penetrated the attic and could be seen along the roof peak. As of this report, it is too soon to know what caused the fire. The homeowner was nearly finished with renovations to the home.

Biloxi firefighters turned out with three engines and plenty of manpower. Debris falling from the attic covered the firemen in cinders while they were inside the home and had to be hosed-off during cleanup.

The home is in one of Biloxi's last remaining old beachfront communities. Homes immediately facing the beach on Iberville Drive were destroyed by Katrina, but most of the homes on the street did not suffer from Katrina's storm surge.

Nearby homes were not damaged from the fire, a fire hydrant was nearby as well.
