Ribbon cutting ceremonies Thursday marked the re-opening of the Hancock
Bank's historic building in Bay St. Louis Old Town. The bank has been
fully restored and open for business. The restored bank also becomes the
first bay road business to reopen in since Hurricane Katrina hit the Coast
August 29, 2005.
More than $2 million was put into the restoration
Hancock Bank's
Bay St. Louis branch, which was the historic home of the Gulfport-based
company. The bank was gutted by hurricane Katrina but now is in better
shape than ever and ready to lead the financial recovery of that city's
formerly busy business district that was once the location of quaint
shops, restaurants and an area that was a favorite of visitors to the
city.
The bank is alone among the buildings that once lined the road, but
that is not expected to last much longer. There are plans to restore the
road and seawall, a temporary road is in place currently, and many more
shops and businesses are expected to be built over the next couple of
years.
The grand re-opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of the Hancock Bank in
Bay St. Louis in Hancock County was held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and over
120 people were in attendance.
Bank officials say they were determined to restore the building as it
represents a key part of the company's history. The company's historic
bank in Pass Christian is also undergoing restoration and is expected to
be finished later this year.
