JACKSON—The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office and Mississippi Gaming Commission will join Special Olympics of Mississippi athletes next week for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run as it passes through Jackson.

The event will be held Wednesday, May 17, at 10 a.m. beginning at the Mississippi Gaming Commission. The Law Enforcement Torch Run—coordinated by the Special Olympics of Mississippi—unites officers from law enforcement agencies and corrections departments across the state in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics of Mississippi. Each summer, law enforcement officials carry the Flame of Hope across the state, ending on the Gulf Coast with the lighting of the cauldron, which officially opens the Special Olympics Summer Games. This is the first year the run will have an event in Jackson.

"We are excited to team up with the Gaming Commission in hosting this event for its debut in Jackson, and we appreciate the athletes who will join us,” said General Hood. “We hope this leg of the Torch Run turns into a tradition for our community as a great way to fundraise for the Special Olympics of Mississippi and engage law enforcement statewide as champions for people with disabilities.”

The Jackson portion of the run includes a 0.9 mile route and torch-passing downtown. It will conclude with a ceremony in the green space between the Walter Sillers Building and Mississippi Supreme Court Building at the Statewide Fallen Officers Memorial. Attorney General Jim Hood and Mississippi Gaming Commission Executive Director Allen Godfrey will speak at the event.

This year’s Torch Run will kick off in DeSoto County on May 15 and conclude on May 19 at Keesler Air Force Base for the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics Summer Games.
