MDOT Opens Part of Beach Boulevard in Bay St. Louis

GCN   7/3/09

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) opened a portion of  Beach Boulevard in Bay St. Louis Thursday, July 2.  This was the first phase construction  that begins at Ballentine Street and continued to the CSX railroad.

The project, which includes roadway reconstruction and utility installation, was awarded to Hemphill Construction Company, Inc. of Florence, Mississippi for $5.97 million.  Work on the 1.2 mile stretch of roadway at Ballentine Street, continuing toward U.S. Highway 90 started last year.

URS Corporation of Jackson, Mississippi provided construction engineering and inspection on behalf of MDOT.

Phase two construction will begin next week, starting from the CSX railroad continuing northeast to U.S. Highway 90.  Access will be restricted to local traffic only during the next phase of traffic.

Beach Boulevard was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  Since that time the roadway has been open with a temporary limestone surfacing treatment while the city has worked to do local utility and road work.  The project is scheduled for completion in January of 2010.
