MLK Day gets the Name, Officially

From:  City of Biloxi  1/16/17   GCN

It’s official. The City of Biloxi’s MLK celebration, an event that has attracted thousands to the city over the years, is now known as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, updating a decades-old ordinance that labeled the day as “Great Americans Day.”

The City Council voted unanimously to make the change during a special City Council meeting Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich called for this morning at 10 a.m. The 45-minute meeting was dominated by comments from citizens who praised the city for its years of support of the annual MLK celebration and for steps to amend a resolution that dated back to 1985.

The actual name of the holiday in the city code, which city leaders want to take effect immediately, mirrors the federal declaration: “Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

Added Mayor Gilich: “We’re calling it what we’ve celebrated it as for years: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.”
