Pascagoula -
The City of Pascagoula is scheduled to begin construction of the new
“Katrina Trail” within Beach Park on Tuesday, June 1, with completion of
the work by the five year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in August.
“The new ‘Katrina Trail’
project will begin on the west side of the playground and meander by the
canal in the park before connecting with the existing sidewalks to the
south,” explained Darcie Crew, Pascagoula Parks & Recreation Director.
“To complete the loop, repairs will be made to the existing sidewalk
during construction.”
Signage for the trail along the
project will focus on fitness and active lifestyles with Hurricane Katrina
facts from Pascagoula along the way.
“Beach Park went underwater
during Katrina so it’s fitting that the trail be placed there and it
complements the Katrina Monument unveiled at the one year anniversary of
the storm,” said Frank Corder, Ward 4 Councilman. “Once completed, the
trail will become a great addition to the facility, insuring we remember
our past while walking to a healthier future.”
Sponsors of the new “Katrina
Trail” include: Charter Bank, Chevron, First Federal, Fletcher
Construction, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Singing River Federal Credit
Union, Singing River Health Systems, and The Bacot/McCarty Foundation.
Inspiration for the new trail
can be found on the Katrina Monument within Beach Park that reads, "May
the winds of destruction and the waves of sorrow forever remind us of the
opportunity and hope we have found – Frank Corder.”
