New Bay St. Louis "Oak Tree"

From: News Release  2/3/12   GCN

A new live oak tree has sprung fully grown from a wall on the streets of Old Town Bay St Louis and the artists of Gallery 220 and Clay Creations are throwing a coming out party to celebrate its birth. Although tempted to name the oak mural “Athena”, the
artists instead asked area third graders to come up with names for the tree and write essays explaining their choices. The winner will be chosen by Mayor Les Fillingame, and all of the essays will be on display in the historic art deco building at 220 Main Street during the Second Saturday Artwalk on February 11.

The oak tree painting on the side of the building facing the beach is the latest in the artistic evolution of the building. Constructed circa 1929, the rounded corners and stepped parapet roof line of the building welcomes visitors to Old Town and it is perfectly situated at the mid point between lower Old Town and the Depot District. It has been the home to many businesses over the years, and for several years has featured local and regional artwork both within and without. A survivor of Hurricane Katrina, the doors of the building opened by artists just weeks after the storm, and for many months the corner was the social hub of the town. Locals remember the weekly celebrations in the months immediately following Katrina, when residents and volunteers alike gathered to begin the healing process at this very special location.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in the tree-naming contest will receive awards from the mayor and all of the participating children will receive certificates of participation. Jenise McCardell of Clay Creations has designed a new plaque commemorating the tree, and all of the artists in the building will be on hand for the event. The public is invited to stop by anytime to browse through the fine art and terrific craft in Old Town’s only cooperative gallery, and from 5-8 PM on February 11, patrons are invited to stop by for food and drink provided, as always, free of charge.
