New Pickup Service Goes into Effect This Week, more Biloxi News

From:  City of Biloxi   9/29/17   GCN

The new garbage, trash and recycling contract goes into effect this week in Biloxi and surrounding areas, but some Biloxi residents have already seen the new trash contractor, Pelican Waste, making rounds.

The Harrison County Utility Authority, which contracts for the trio of services for most residents, except for those in Gulfport, had Pelican picking up trash in Woolmarket earlier this week and will have the firm in other areas of Biloxi on Saturday, a day after Waste Pro was supposed to make its final trash rounds today.

Under the new contract, which took effect Oct. 1, the utility authority has two contactors: Team Waste to pickup the brown garbage carts and green recycling carts, and Pelican to handle trash, which is typically yard trimmings and limbs set on public rights-of-way.

Team Waste is scheduled to make its first garbage and recycling pickups beginning this week, while Pelican will focus on trash. Services will be offered on the same day each week. In Biloxi, pickup for areas north of I-10 and the Eagle Point area will be Thursday of each week, and pickup for areas south of I-10 will be Friday.

One snag: Although the new brown trash carts have been delivered, the Harrison County Utility Authority today announced that  some of the new green recycling carts won't be delivered until between Oct. 2 and 10. Hurricane Harvey delayed production, which was taking place in the Houston area.

Meantime, the utility authority says residents with issues should call 228-701-9086.

Go-carts review: The Biloxi City Council, which meets Tuesday at 6 p.m., could decide to forego a public hearing and vote on the go-cart track proposed for West Biloxi.
