Wicker Says Flood Insurance Bill Moving Forward in Senate
Senator to Offer Amendment to Add Multiple-peril
Coverage
From: Office of Sen. Roger Wicker Filed 5/5/08 GCN
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker
(R-Miss.) today announced his intention to offer an amendment to add
multiple-peril coverage to legislation to reauthorize the National Flood
Insurance Program.
The Senate is expected to consider the legislation this week and vote on
Wicker’s multiple-peril amendment.
“This is an important step for people along the Gulf
Coast and other coastal areas whose lives have been significantly impacted
by unaffordable insurance rates,” Sen. Wicker said. “Catastrophic
coverage in the event of a hurricane should be seamless. Property owners
shouldn’t have to go to court to fight over whether it was wind or water
that destroyed their home or business. Multiple-peril coverage would help
future storm victims avoid this problem, and it would also protect
American taxpayers from having to pay for giant disaster relief packages
the next time a hurricane hits.”
The Senate could begin working on the National Flood
Insurance Program legislation as early as tomorrow. Sen. Wicker’s
multiple-peril amendment, which is cosponsored by Sen. Thad Cochran, would
likely be considered later in the week.
