FEMA TRAILER FAQ

How long can people keep the trailers?
People will be able to keep the trailers for up to 18 months.

Will people have to pay after 18 months?
After 18 months the trailer will be returned to FEMA.

What if people do not own private property?
If people do not have private property on which a trailer may beplaced, then they will be placed in a commercial site on property leased by FEMA.

What about utility hookups?
Utility bills are the responsibility of the Travel Trailer (TT) resident. If an applicant asks to have a TT placed on private property, they will need to have the utilities available on site.

Does debris need to be cleared prior to getting a trailer?
Yes, the site for the TT needs to be clear of debris prior to delivery. If there is no site for the TT to be placed upon, the TT will not be delivered.

Where can I get propane?
Propane can be purchased through a local propane dealership.

My needs have changed, how can I Get an ADA trailer?
If an applicant has received a TT but feels they need an ADA trailer, they need to apply with FEMA. A Pre-Placement Interview (PPI) has to be conducted to determine if there is an actual need for an ADA trailer. A team of inspectors may also come out to the current site to perform a visual assessment of the applicant’s needs. Once these steps have been taken, the process would continue as normal. If the applicant has not received a TT and feels they need an ADA trailer, they need to apply with FEMA through the FEMA helpline at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or online at www.fema.gov or visit a DRC and make their special housing needs known. It is very important that an applicant indicates their special housing needs during the initial application in order to make the hosing application process as smooth as possible.

The process of applying for and occupying a TT can be time-consuming and requests need to be made through the proper channels. Call the helpline (1-800-621-3362) or visit a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) and make your housing needs known. Evacuees who need ADA compliant travel trailers need to be specific about their needs and can be accommodated. Utilities must be available at the site. A site inspector must look at your site to make sure it is appropriate for a travel trailer or mobile home. After the site is approved and permits obtained, the travel trailer or mobile home will be delivered by a contractor with FEMA. Once delivered, a FEMA contractor will set up the unit and schedule and complete the utility hookup. When the contractor has completed the process of readying the trailer for the applicant, a FEMA representative will complete the appropriate paperwork for occupancy.

How long will it take to get a trailer?
The process of applying for and occupying a TT can be time-consuming and the length of time to receive a TT can depend on the priority status of the applicant. Applicants who are considered Priority 1 eligible could receive their trailer in 5-7 days. Otherwise, it may take nearly 4-6 weeks.

I was sharing a trailer and now need my own, what should I do?
People have to visit a DRC and speak to a FEMA representative or call the 1-800-621-FEMA helpline to determine their eligibility. If they are eligible for a TT, then they would continue the usual application process.
