MDOT PROPOSALS

In late 1998, MDOT identified 7 possible routes for the North/South Connector between I 10 and Highway 90 in Biloxi .  The MDOT proposal eventually called for a six-lane limited access  expressway that would slice across the City and dump six lanes of traffic onto the already overloaded, four-lane  Highway 90.

While MDOT's Wayne Brown says he currently has no plan to relieve Biloxi's traffic congestion, the agency still has a plan on the table. MDOT's most recent plan is to build an elevated bridge from the Woolmarket exit to Highway 90 in Biloxi cutting across the east side of Biloxi's Hiller Park and exiting on 90 due south of there. This route would cause numerous subdivision intrusions on both sides of Back Bay, ruin Hiller Park and dump a huge amount of traffic on a portion of Highway 90 that is experiencing tremendous growth. And as an elevated roadway, it would create a huge empty neighborhood-dividing eyesore through the heart of Biloxi.

In addition, MDOT still has no real funding method for this expensive and harmful roadway. At every mention of this project, MDOT had couched their promises for a new road in terms of "if" funding can be found. The latest federal highway bill has no funding earmarked for such a road.
